MA Print Showcase

Masters degree show at Paintworks (2023)

In January I completed my printmaking masters degree, culminating with an exhibition at the Paintworks Event Space here in Bristol.

It has been a fantastic experience that has made me a more conceptual artist, has introduced me to countless new skills, and to a fantastic group of people, many of whom I will stay in touch with.

Autumn Light (2022), drypoint etching, litho and chine colle.

Throughout the degree I realised I was drawn to ecological issues and my final collection of work was based on the book by Suzanne Simard, Finding the Mother Tree.

Trees communicate via mycorrhizal fungi to trade water and other nutrients. Ancient and mature trees nurture their offspring via these networks, as well as trading nutrients between other species. Botanist Simard has spent years working on this theory as part of a wider body of work, discovering what it means for forests, the climate and the wider Anthropocene.

My prints investigate how the concept of the sublime can be utilised to envoke an emotional response to the pieces, highlighting the importance of mother trees within the eco system.
